Human metabolism and elimination of the anthocyanin, cyanidin-3-glucoside: a 13C-tracer study

Abstract: Anthocyanins are more bioavailable than previously perceived, and their metabolites are present in the circulation for ≤48 h after ingestion. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT01106729.

“…However, a study in humans using 13C 5 -labeled anthocyanin showed that the relative bioavailability was 12.3861.38% (17). Furthermore, anthocyanins can be absorbed into the circulation in their intact form in small amounts, while substantial amounts of anthocyanins enter the colon and undergo extensive metabolic transformation by the gut microbiota, producing a wide range of aromatic and phenolic compounds (33).…”

“…Literature shows that the relative bioavailability of cyanidin-3-glucoside was 12.38 ± 1.38%, where 5.37 ± 0.67% was excreted in urine and 6.91 ± 1.59% in the breath within 48 h after oral ingestion [68]. The reported metabolites of cyanidin-3-glucoside after digestion by the human body are phenolic acid, and phenolic conjugates, hippuric, phenylacetic, and phenylpropenoic acids.…”
