Human–Machine Interface: Multiclass Classification by Machine Learning on 1D EOG Signals for the Control of an Omnidirectional Robot

Abstract: People with severe disabilities require assistance to perform their routine activities; a Human–Machine Interface (HMI) will allow them to activate devices that respond according to their needs. In this work, an HMI based on electrooculography (EOG) is presented, the instrumentation is placed on portable glasses that have the task of acquiring both horizontal and vertical EOG signals. The registration of each eye movement is identified by a class and categorized using the one hot encoding technique to test pre… Show more

“…Conventional electrodes, wet or dry silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl), are generally used to measure EOG signals [ 76 , 77 , 78 , 79 , 80 ]. For example, wet Ag/AgCl electrodes are used for the analysis of various activity recognition fields [ 65 , 81 , 82 ] or HMI controllers [ 37 , 60 , 62 , 83 ]. Dry flat Ag/AgCl electrodes are used on various wearable platforms such as eyeglasses [ 35 ], head caps [ 55 ], and goggles [ 34 ].…”

“…Kang et al applied an ensemble network with attention mechanisms [39]. Pérez-Reynoso et al developed an EOG-controlled robotic system [40]. However, gap still exists in how deep learning can further decode complex patterns and how real-time inference can be deployed.…”
