Human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2) in Portugal: Clinical spectrum, circulating subtypes, virus isolation, and plasma viral load

Abstract: The human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2) is responsible for 4. 5% of AIDS cases in Portugal. Six HIV-2 subtypes have been described so far, subtype A being proposed as more pathogenic than the rest. The relationship between the clinical status and levels of both cellular and plasma HIV-2 viraemia is not well known, nor their modifications under antiretroviral therapy. Thirty-two consecutive HIV-2 infected persons (17 men, 15 women) attending two different hospitals in Lisbon in 1997 were enrolled prospe… Show more

“…As shown in Fig. 1, HIV-2 viremia had a maximum of 2,754 RNA copies per ml and was Ͻ500 RNA copies/ml (detection limit) in 21 of 27 patients, as quantified using a previously described RT-PCR test (22). The geometric mean of the viral load in HIV-1 ϩ patients was 8,476 RNA copies/ml (range: 50 -740,000) as quantified by RT-PCR (Ultrasensitive Test; Roche Molecular Systems, Branchburg, NJ).…”

“…HIV-2 infection is characterized by a low or undetectable plasma viral load (3,5,46,50,54), in agreement with its reduced transmission rate (2,26,30), providing a natural model to investigate the relative contribution of HIV replication to AIDS progression.…”

“…The reduced viremia is considered the main reason why HIV-2 infection remains confined to West Africa (39 -41). In Portugal, because of its connections with its past colonies there is a significant prevalence of HIV-2, currently accounting for 5% of the HIV infections (42).…”
