Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in parenteral drug users: evolution of the epidemic over 10 years. Valencian Epidemiology and Prevention of HIV Disease Study Group

Abstract: Trends of prevalence of HIV-1 infection approximate trends of subjacent incidence rate. Despite decrease in HIV-1 infection frequency observed over 10 years, both the prevalence and incidence figures continue to be high in absolute terms. It is necessary to intensify and adapt preventive measures to each subgroup at risk of infection and in the case of heterosexual transmission ensure that the failure observed in the case of IDU is not repeated.

“…The HIV incidence in this group is much higher than that observed among a cohort of 1886 IDU attending clinics for drug addiction treatment in Barcelona between 1991 and 1996 (global incidence of 3.66 per 100 PY), 7 and not so different from that observed among a cohort of 1746 IDU who attended at the AIDS Prevention and Information Centers of the Autonomous Region of Valencia (6.85 cases per 100 PY; 95% CI 6.04-7.66). 8 For MSM, the incidence observed in our study was much closer to those observed in other studies performed on repeat testers. McFarland et al reported an HIV incidence of 2.8 per 100 PY among MSM who repeated anonymous HIV testing in San Francisco in 1995.…”

“…HIV prevalence among PWID in this study was a third to a half of what it was in the 1980s and 90s in Spain [11,33], although the overall prevalence was very high (17%), only lower than that found among MSM sex workers. During the study period, these figures remained stable.…”

“…More information about the cohort can be obtained elsewhere. 9 A soundex code constructed with the date of birth, sex, name and surname initials was used to anonymously identify the individual and link the subjects' tests. Before HIV testing, a personal face-to-face interview was carried out by health professionals where information on different sociodemographic variables and risk practices was collected.…”
