Human health risk assessment of metals and metalloids in mining areas of the Northeast Andean foothills of the Ecuadorian Amazon

Abstract: This article is part of the special series "Diversity of Knowledge for a Sustainable Future in Latin America" and highlights timely research presented at the virtual SETAC Latin America 14th Biennial Meeting (2021). These articles reflect the urgent need to combine different knowledge sources and expertise to face current environmental challenges, decision-making, and problem solving. Risk, recovery, restoration, modeling, regulations, anthropic impact, and human health are some of the global environmental iss… Show more

“…The human being only needs small doses of a few metals, they are called micronutrients, as in the case of Cu and Fe (Cozzolino, 1997). The direct ingestion of heavy metals dissolved in water or indirectly accumulated in seafood, above the limit, is one of the main sources harmful to human beings, and causes disturbances in metabolism, besides carcinogenic activity (Cozzolino, 1997;Galarza et al, 2023).…”

“…The presence of anthropogenic chemical contaminants may not be considered as pollution unless it affects the environment or biota. According to Galarza et al (2023), contamination occurs when the direct or indirect introduction of matter or energy into aquatic environments passes concentrations whose harmful effects are manifested, i.e. results in measurable impacts on individual organisms, populations or biological communities.…”

“…In Ecuadorian Amazonia (the western portion of the Amazon basin), large karstic aquifers systems are present (Buckalew et al 1998 The Amazon region has been exposed to environmental impacts caused by mining, extensive agriculture, sh farming, a lack of basic infrastructure and domestic waste, oil extraction (Lessmann et al 2016), the mismanagement of solid waste in land lls, and the constant load of domestic waste outfall to the tributaries of major rivers (Capparelli et al 2020(Capparelli et al , 2021Galarza et al 2022). For example, in the Napo River Basin, anthropogenic impacts are consequence of the growth of the population and the diversi cation of economic activities (Pimm et al 2014;Capparelli et al 2020).…”
