Human Endogenous Retroviruses-K (HML-2) Expression Is Correlated with Prognosis and Progress of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Abstract: Background. The association between human endogenous retroviruses-K (HERV-K) (HML-2) and human disease, including a variety of cancers, has been indicated. However, the function of HERV-K (HML-2) in the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) still remains largely unclear. Methods. We detected the expression of HERV-K (HML-2) in 84 HCC tissues and adjacent nontumor tissues by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) and analyzed its correlation with the clinical parameters. Result. The HEVR-K level was signi… Show more

“…For instance, HERV-K expression has been correlated with the prognosis and progress of hepatocellular carcinoma [ 23 ], and is strictly required to sustain CD133 + melanoma cells with stemness features [ 17 ]. Recently, it was reported that activation of HERV-K envelope protein is essential to tumorigenesis and metastasis formation in breast cancer [ 24 ].…”

“…[11,12] In recent years, the link between Lp-PLA2 gene polymorphism and stroke, particularly ischemic stroke, is investigated in several studies. [13] Hiramoto et al [14] have reported that Lp-PLA2 V279F gene polymorphism is a genetic risk factor for stroke. Li and Ye [15] have reported that Lp-PLA2 A379V gene polymorphism is significantly correlated with ischemic stroke and genotype CC is a risk factor for such disease.…”

“…Of the three patients with RNA-seq data, only one patient showed a subfamily-level change in expression. This was linked to an increase in HERV activity, which previous studies have reported for HERV-K in various cancers (Wallace et al 2014;Ma et al 2016). We were also able to examine the expression of specific mobile element loci in which there were informative reads.…”
