Habermas has criticized the position that educational and genetic enhancements are parallel events (2001, 91). I, on the other hand, will provide reasons for the position that there is a structural analogy between educational and genetic enhancement such that the moral evaluation of these two procedures should be seen as analogous, too. I will show that an affirmation of educational enhancement suggests an affirmation of genetic enhancement. In addition, I offer reasons why both types of enhancement ought to be affirmed. I will progress as follows. First, I will explain the relevance of the question by considering transhumanism and posthumanism. Both are contemporary philosophical and cultural movements in which the question concerning enhancement is central. Second, I will compare educational and genetic enhancement, showing that Habermas’ arguments concerning their relationship are implausible. In the conclusion, I will refer to the relevance of this insight to the future of education, when the humanities will need to be transformed into metahumanities.

Strong arguments have been formulated that the computational limits of disembodied artificial intelligence (AI) will, sooner or later, be a problem that needs to be addressed. Similarly, convincing cases for how embodied forms of AI can exceed these limits makes for worthwhile research avenues. This paper discusses how embodied cognition brings with it other forms of information integration and decision-making consequences that typically involve discussions of machine cognition and similarly, machine consciousness. N. Katherine Hayles’s novel conception of nonconscious cognition in her analysis of the human cognition-consciousness connection is discussed in relation to how nonconscious cognition can be envisioned and exacerbated in embodied AI. Similarly, this paper offers a way of understanding the concept of suffering in a way that is different than the conventional sense of attributing it to either a purely physical state or a conscious state, instead of grounding at least a type of suffering in this form of cognition.

The following three re-evaluations lead to a radical paradigm shift which has occurred at least since Darwin's times: 1. A move from a dualist anthropology towards a non-dualist one 2. A radical increase of anthropotechniques with the power of enhancing human capacities so that the likelihood of the posthuman coming about can be increased 3. The posthuman can come about by means of digital technologies or with the help of biotechnologies whereby the field of genetics, on which I focus here, is particularly relevant These three basic insights lead to a massive number of intellectual, social, political, ethical, and economic challenges. In the following reflections, I will present a selection of emerging bioethical issues concerning gene technologies, in particular CRISPR/Cas 9, and how they can be addressed in an appropriate manner within a wider cultural context.
