Human contribution to climate change remains questionable

Abstract: The principal focus of climate science is certainly atmospheric science and meteorology, but the subject involves many other areas of the Earth sciences as well as different disciplines, such as physics, chemistry and even biology. This complexity makes climate science both fascinating and controversial. It also undergoes rapid change as new facts and analyses emerge. Yet public interest in the possibility that human activities can change climate has become so intense that far‐reaching policies are instituted … Show more

“…Confident assertions that these effects are easily separable [Michaels and Knappenberger, 2000] are not supported by our analysis. Finally, the failure of the MSU 2LT record to show significant warming has often been highlighted as the major remaining inconsistency between theory and data [Singer, 1999] …”

“…The NIPCC has recently retreated from its former position, and even Singer has suspected climate warming to be real [9,10]. Now that the key question in the debate has moved to whether climate warming is caused by natural factors or an anthropogenic impact, global warming has been accepted as fact.…”

“…In his Eos contri bution [Singer, 1999a], he states that "the zero and negative lines were edited out" of Figure 8.10b in SAR.The implication of both his past and present criticism is that the IPCC report failed to show these shorter timescale trends in order to suppress information that might have contradicted the IPCC's "discernible human influence" conclusion. As we have pointed out previously, this is not correct.…”

“…Singer's reply in Eos [Singer, 1999a] contains a two-panel figure. The top panel is reprinted from the Santer et al [1995a] Climate Dynamics paper. It shows the pattern correlation,/?^, between a single model-predicted pattern of temperature change and a sequence of observed patterns of temperature change spanning the period 1910 to 1993.…”
