Human chorionic gonadotropin measurements in parathyroid carcinoma

Abstract: Objective: Preoperatively, it is difficult to differentiate between parathyroid cancer (PtCa) and severe primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) due to a benign tumor. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a tumor marker in trophoblastic and nontrophoblastic cancers and hyperglycosylated hCG is increased in hCG-secreting malignancies. We investigated whether hCG can distinguish PtCa cancer from benign disease and add prognostic information. Design: Observational study. Methods: Measurement of urinary hCG (total and… Show more

“…In contrast to that, three cases which fall in category of markedly high HCG, there was incredibly raised excretion of total HCG 1542 fmol/mg Cr and its malignant isoform 1.5 fmol/mg Cr in urine. The findings of our present study was similar to the results of Rubin et al (Rubin et al, 2008). The augment in urinary HCG showed a signal of more aggressive stage of parathyroid carcinoma.…”

“…Abnormally elevated serum and urinary levels of hCG and its malignant hyperglycosylated isoform have been described in patients with parathyroid cancer, but not in those with benign parathyroid tumors. [94][95][96] These assays might be useful in very selected cases for the diagnosis and monitoring of selected patients. Moreover, elevations of hCG might be predictive of complications such as hip fracture and death.…”

“…Moreover, elevations of hCG might be predictive of complications such as hip fracture and death. 95 Rarely, parathyroid carcinomas are non-functional [3][4][5]46 and at clinical evaluation can be misdiagnosed as thyroid or thymic carcinoma because of locally advanced disease (palpable neck mass, dysphagia, hoarseness due to laryngeal nerve palsy). Immunohistochemical staining for PTH, thyroglobulin, thyroid transcription factor 1, and calcitonin may help ascertain the correct diagnosis.…”
