This study investigates the status and anthropogenic pressures on seagrass ecosystem. Urbanization and tourism in the coastal areas of Bintan, Indonesia were increasing in the recent years. They have become new pressures to intertidal ecosystem and habitats, particularly seagrass ecosystem. Seagrass meadows are the important ecosystem and habitats in Bintan region. They provide a wide range of ecosystem services, including for small-scale fisheries and have being Dugongs (Dugong dugon) habitats for food. Currently, the sea grass status is less healthy or damaged with 11 species. The anthropogenic disturbance processes have affected the spatial distribution, percent coverage, biodiversity, and community structure of sea grass. Moreover, several species are hard to find. Directly, sea grass meadows are impacted by introduced coastal development (i.e. settlement area, tourism accommodation, port, etc.), land-based pollution, reclamation, boating traffic, dredging activities and tourism activities. Sea grass conservation area and marine spatial planning based on the land- and seascape connectivity is important for conservation efforts and sustainable management of sea grass.

Salah satu peran penting ekosistem lamun yaitu sebagai penyerap karbon yang berasal dari atmosfer. Pulau Bintan merupakan salah satu pulau dengan hamparan padang lamun yang cukup luas. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengestimasi kandungan karbon pada padang lamun yang berasal dari seluruh jenis lamun dan sedimen yang berada di perairan Berakit dan Dompak Pulau Bintan. Penentuan potensi cadangan karbon dilakukan dengan melihat estimasi cadangan karbon di dalam sedimen dan biomassa lamun meliputi bagian atas (daun dan pelepah daun) dan bagian bawah lamun (rhizome dan akar). Pengukuran stok karbon pada sedimen lamun dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode pengabuan kering atau Loss on Ignation (LOI) dan kandungan karbon pada biomassa lamun diukur menggunakan metode konversi dengan konstanta. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan pada stasiun Berakit estimasi total cadangan karbon sedimen sebesar 91 Mg Corg ha-1 dan 10,58 Mg C/m2 untuk estimasi kandungan karbon lamun, sedangkan stasiun Dompak nilai estimasi total cadangan karbon pada sedimen berkisar103,80 Mg Corg ha-1 dan 3,34 Mg C/m2 untuk estimasi kandungan karbon bagian lamun. Kandungan karbon pada substrat dipengaruhi oleh komposisi sedimen dan kandungan karbon pada lamun dipengaruhi oleh kerapatan lamun.

<p>Coastal zone is of great importance in the provision of various valuable ecosystem services. However, it is also sensitive and vulnerable to environmental changes due to high human populations and interactions between the land and ocean. Major threats of pollution from over enrichment of nutrients, increasing metals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and climate change have led to severe ecological degradation in the coastal zone, while few studies have focused on the combined impacts of pollution and climate change on the coastal ecosystems at the global level. A global overview of nutrients, metals, POPs, and major environmental changes due to climate change and their impacts on coastal ecosystems was carried out in this study. Coasts of the Eastern Atlantic and Western Pacific were hotspots of concentrations of several pollutants, and mostly affected by warming climate. These hotspots shared the same features of large populations, heavy industry and (semi-) closed sea. Estimation of coastal ocean capital, integrated management of land-ocean interaction in the coastal zone, enhancement of integrated global observation system, and coastal ecosystem-based management can play effective roles in promoting sustainable management of coastal marine ecosystems. Enhanced management from the perspective of mitigating pollution and climate change was proposed.</p>
