Human anatomic variations: common, external iliac, origin of the obturator, inferior epigastric and medial circumflex femoral arteries, and deep femoral artery course on the medial side of the femoral vessels

Abstract: Probably, the most variable anatomic pattern relates to the iliac arteries system. There are reported here multiple rare anatomic variants found in a single case, at CT evaluation: (a) the unilaterally present common trunk of origin of the obturator, inferior epigastric, and medial circumflex femoral arteries and (b) the medial insertion of the deep femoral artery (DFA) onto the femoral artery, which placed the DFA initially on the medial side of the femoral vein. Such rare, but possible, anatomic variations s… Show more

“…However, a limited number of cases will be diagnosed in presumed early stages of the disease. However, up to 15% of these cases prove to have positive lymph nodes, which will significantly influence the long-term prognosis [2]; in the meantime, routine performance of extended pelvic and para-aortic lymph node dissection in presumed early stage ovarian cancer will lead to an unnecessary surgical procedure in up to 80% of cases who have otherwise negative lymph nodes [3][4][5][6]. Moreover, performing such procedures will increase the risk of developing perioperative complications, which might significantly influence the quality of life [7,8].…”

“…Moreover, performing such procedures will increase the risk of developing perioperative complications, which might significantly influence the quality of life [7,8]. Therefore, identifying cases which present retroperitoneal para-aortic lymph node metastases will enable the oncologist to provide a better selection of cases that will benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy [2,3,[9][10][11]. The aim of the current paper is to investigate the risk factors for developing para-aortic lymph node metastases in cases diagnosed with a presumed early stage of disease.…”

“…However, if surgery with radical intent is proposed, attention should be focused on the anatomical particularities of patients presenting a pelvic kidney [15,16]. Therefore, in such cases, the renal pedicle as well as the ureter can be situated in close contact with the iliac vessels, particular attention being needed in order to perform the pelvic lymph node dissection [17][18][19]. The single case series that has been published so far on this theme originates from India and included three such cases.…”

“…Similar to other solid tumors, it seems that in vulvar cancer the preoperative levels of serum albumin significantly influence the short-term outcomes (12,13). More specifically, a lower level of preoperative albumin caused by malnutrition and albumin synthesis suppression as a consequence of a systemic inflammatory response is responsible for a higher rate of postoperative morbidity (14)(15)(16)(17). In a recent study conducted by Bekos et al in 2019, the authors included 103 patients submitted to vulvar cancer surgery, nine of whom presented with preoperative hypoalbuminemia (18).…”
