Abstract: here may be precisely related to the severity of the disease. The case we described illustrates the rapid efficacy of doxycycline to treat the severe neurologic consequences of rickettsial diseases, as well as the effectiveness and rapidity of the swab sample diagnostic test. “…According to a meta-analysis, based on studies published between 1900 and 2015, E. multilocularis has been documented in red foxes from 21 countries (Oksanen et al, 2016) (Figure 40). Since 2015 and 2020, this parasite has also been found in foxes and golden jackals from Croatia and Hungary, respectively (Du sek et al, 2020;Balog et al, 2021). Surveillance of E. granulosus s.l.…”

“…AE infection is not easily identified due to the long latency period and thus some infected individuals do not search care or only at a very advanced stage; it can also be misdiagnosed as cirrhosis, liver cavernous hemangioma, hepatic pus-filled cysts or liver malignant tumor. Correct diagnosis of the first AE case ever identified in Croatia (February 2020) took 2.5 years, because radiologic findings were inconsistent with cystic echinococcosis and clinicians assumed that was the only type of human echinococcosis in Croatia ( Dušek et al, 2020 ).…”

“…However, the raising number of foxes and nutrias might present a potential threat for AE in humans. In neighbouring Croatia, the first human case of AE was confirmed in 2017 ( Dušek et al, 2020 ) and the disease appears to be emerging in Hungary ( Dezsényi et al, 2021 ). Nevertheless, the results of our study and those of others ( Umhang et al, 2013 ) lead us to consider nutrias can be a relevant bioindicators of the presence of E. multilocularis in environment.…”
