“…Aeromonas salrnonicida and Aerornonas hydrophila are both important pathogens of fish (13,14) and A . hydrophila is known to cause a variety of clinical infections in man and other animals (15,16). Because outer membrane fragments can be isolated directly from cell-free culture medium by ultracentrifugation they provide a rapid means of access to outer membrane material which may be useful in structural studies and in a detailed examination of the role of outer membrane components in pathogenesis.…”

“…They have long been known to cause disease in coldblooded animals but in recent years increasing attention has been given to their role as human pathogens. Major series and reviews (2-6) indicate that they may cause a wide spectrum of disease including septicaemia, especially in the immunocompromised patient, soft tissue infections (sometimes with myonecrosis), diarrhoea, and miscellaneous diseases such as endocarditis (3), meningitis (3), septic arthritis and osteomyelitis (3,7,8), hepatic abscess (9), nosocomial pneumonia (10) and urinary tract infection (10).Three of the five Aeromonas spp. recognized, Aeromonas hydrophila, A eromonas caviae and A eromonas sobria, are motile, and two, Aeromonas salmonicida and Aeromonas media, non-motile.…”

“…They are also identified as a significant bacterial pathogen of fish and other cold-blooded animals (Bullock 1961;Shotts et al 1972) and man (Davis et al 1978). Variation in virulence in fish was observed among various isolates of A. hydrophila (De Figueiredo and Plumb 1977;Lallier et al 1980).…”
