Human Adenovirus Type 55 Distribution, Regional Persistence, and Genetic Variability

Abstract: A cute respiratory diseases (ARD) are caused by numerous viral pathogens, including several human adenovirus (HAdV) types. Respiratory HAdV infections range from mild to severe and are fatal in some cases. HAdV-associated respiratory disease has threatened military readiness, and an increasing number of outbreaks and isolated cases documented in civilian communities in the United States and other countries (1-4) indicate that it is an emerging threat to public health. The live oral HAdV type 4 and type 7 vacci… Show more

“…The complete genome sequences of strains CHOP6887 and 21962_S4TF53 are both 34,781 nucleotides long with 48.8% G+C content ( Table 1 ). CHOP6887 (GenBank accession number MT513753 ) is phylogenetically distinct from the two known U.S. strains ( MN654394 and MN654392 ) ( 16 ) ( Fig. 1 ).…”

“…Here, we report two new HAdV-55 isolates and their complete genome sequences. Isolate CHOP6887 (GenBank accession number MT513753 ), from a pediatric patient in Pennsylvania in 2006, was first isolated from a nasopharyngeal swab at the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute ( 16 ) and then was plaque purified at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Isolate 21962_S4TF53 ( MW053454 ), which originated from a U.S. military member stationed in South Korea in 2019, was isolated at the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine ( 16 ).…”

“…Among these serotypes, HAdV 3 and HAdV 7 are the main causative pathogens of lower respiratory tract infection epidemics that cause fatalities [ 4 , 5 ] and are epidemic in many countries [ 6 ], including Singapore, the United States, the United Kingdom, Korea [ 7 ], and Canada [ 8 ]. In China, except for HAdV 3 and HAdV 7 [ 9 , 10 ], HAdV 21 [ 11 ] and HAdV 55 [ 12 , 13 ] that also cause severe symptoms and belong to species B were reported sporadically.…”
