Huddles and their effectiveness at the frontlines of clinical care: a scoping review

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Brief, stand-up meetings known as huddles may improve clinical care, but knowledge about huddle implementation and effectiveness at the frontlines is fragmented and setting specific. This work provides a comprehensive overview of huddles used in diverse health care settings, examines the empirical support for huddle effectiveness, and identifies knowledge gaps and opportunities for future research. “…Studies of huddles in healthcare indicate that the intervention is effective in improving both work and team processes and improved clinical outcomes. 75 Whereas team charters help teams develop a shared mental model, team huddles help ensure that teams maintain their SMMs. Over time, SMMs tend to degrade, especially for teams facing acute stress in executing their work.…”

“…Agrobacterium tumefaciens-based solid plate assays were carried out to detect AHL production [54] as previously described [55]. Briefly, 500 µL of the homogenate were loaded in a central well of 0.7% LB agar plates supplemented with 40 µg of 5-bromo-3indolyl-β-D-galactopyranoside (X-Gal) per mL and 250 µL (OD = 2.5) of overnight cultures of Agrobacterium tumefaciens biosensor.…”

“…The huddle is a management and leadership tool for many healthcare settings. Adoption of the daily huddle promotes evidence-based, clinically competent, quality care (Pimentel et al, 2021). The huddle is a tool that can be used to systematically implement school nurse actions and activities within the key principles of the Framework for 21st-Century School Nursing Practice TM : Care Coordination, Leadership, Quality Improvement, Community/Public Health, and Standards of Practice (National Association of School Nurses, 2020).…”
