Backgrounds: Hearing loss occurs in a third of the elderly population worldwide but is often overlooked. Studies have shown that hearing loss increases the risk of depression in the elderly population and reduces the quality of life. Objective : to prove the relationship between hearing loss and depression in geriatrics and to assess the effect of physical illness in geriatric patients that may cause depression. Methods: This type of research is observational-analytic with a cross-sectional approach. The study was conducted at the Geriatrics Polyclinic, Dr. Soetomo Hospital. Result : There are 47 participants in this study who are outpatients of the Geriatrics Polyclinic, that carried out by consecutive sampling. Data are retrieved from medical records and Geriatric Depression Scale questionnaire interviews. The effect of physical illness was assessed as a confounding variable in this study. Data analysis used multiple linear regression, One-Sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test, and Spearman correlation test. Conclusion: This research found hearing loss in most geriatric patients, but the prevalence of depression in the study participants was low. The degree of hearing loss was not related to the Geriatric Depression Scale questionnaire score. Diabetes is a confounding factor in the onset of depression in study participants.

Depression is mood disorder which is indicated by symptoms including feeling sad, confused, hopelessness, reduced concentration and thinking about suicide. One of the non-pharmacological treatments to reduce the level of depression in the elderly is 5 finger hypnosis therapy. The aim of this section is to provide health education about depression, early detection of depression and therapy 5 finger hypnosis to reduce depression in the elderly. The activities are health education, early detection of depression and performing 5 finger hypnosis. The results of examining the level of depression before treatmentsfor in 30 elderly people who experienced depression, none or at least 5 elderly people (17%), 7 elderly people with mild depression (23%), 18 elderly people with moderate depression (60 %) and none experienced major depression (0%). The results of examining the level of depression in the elderly after using 5 finger hypnosis showed that of the 30 elderly who experienced depression, none or at least 14 elderly (46%), 11 elderly who experienced mild depression (37%), 5 elderly who experienced moderate depression. (17%) and elderly with no major depression (0%). The conclusion is that 5 finger hypnosis is effective in reducing the level of depression in the elderly.

Most of the older people who live at the Jambangan Nursing Home in Surabaya experience problems such as changes in emotional conditions, irritability, often day dreaming, feeling anxious about the illness, they think about their children and fear of death (Hatmanti, Mawarda & Muzdalifah, 2019). This fact is a sign of the need to increase health services that are more focused on the older people, because with an increase in the number of older people will be at risk of experiencing vulnerability as a group using health services, as a result of various health problems that arise due to decreased physiological and psychological functions.…”

Background: Psychosocial problems in the older people often occur because physical changes will naturally decrease, in line with increasing age, so that the older people become vulnerable to various degenerative and chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, resulting in several disorders. This study aims to determine the relationship between depression level and the quality of life of the older people at the Jambangan Nursing Home in Surabaya. Methods: The design of this research is correlational analytic with approach cross sectional. The sample using simple random sampling is 80 older people at UPTD Griya Werdha Jambangan Surabaya. The independent variable in this study was the depression level as measured by the questionnaire instrument Geriatric Depression Scale. The dependent variable in this study was the quality of life as measured by questionnaire instrument the WHOQOL-BREF. Data analysis using Spearman rho test = 0.05. Results: The results of this study indicate that most of the older people have moderate psychosocial levels as many as 27 respondents (33.8%) and most of the older people in the category of good quality of life as many as 53 respondents (66.3%).
