HTLV Type I and HTLV Type II Infection among Indians and Natives from Argentina

Abstract: Endemic foci for HTLV-II infection have been identified in several Amerindian populations. To determine HTLV-I and/or HTLV-II infection among Amerindians living in Argentina we studied 454 sera or plasmas from Indians and natives from different areas of our country. All samples were tested by the particle agglutination technique, and positive reactions were confirmed by the immunofluorescence assay (IFA). IFA titration was used to differentiate HTLV-I and HTLV-II antibodies. Twenty-three of 222 samples (10.4%)… Show more

“…The other populations are Amerindians and Mestizos, the latter being of mixed Amerindian and European ancestry. HTLV-I in Argentina is found among European descendants and Mestizos [Bouzas et al, 1990;Bouzas et al, 1994;Muchinik et al, 1993]. In addition, a small number of Amerindians in Argentina have been reported to be infected with HTLV-I [Bouzas et al, 1994].…”

In addition, a small number of Amerindians in Argentina have been reported to be infected with HTLV-I [Bouzas et al, 1994]. Considering that Europe is not an endemic focus for HTLV-I [Network, 1996], it is unlikely that ancestors of HTLV-I carriers in Argentina had acquired the virus in Europe and brought it to South America.…”

“…10,17 Several studies have indicated the presence of HTLV-2 in Matacos and Tobas Indians from Argentina and the Atacama population from Chile. 13,20,22 The seroprevalences of HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 among the Indians of the Amazon region of Peru studied were comparable (0.44% versus 0.44%). Moreover, our finding is the first reported with regard to the presence of HTLV-2 in these aboriginal populations.…”

“…4,5 With the exception of the reported HTLV-2 endemic infection in Indians from Argentina, 13,20 there are no other confirmed reports of HTLV-1/2 infection in the aboriginal Indians from the Amazon region of Peru.…”
