HRTEM and GIXRD studies of CdS nanocrystals embedded in Al2O3 films produced by magnetron RF-sputtering

Abstract: In this paper we report on the structural properties of as-grown CdS nanoparticles embedded in Al 2 O 3 films produced by a magnetron RF-sputtering technique. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction together with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and electron diffraction were used to study the crystallinity and morphology of the CdS nanocrystals. Depending on the deposition parameters, elongated or spherical nanocrystals were grown. HRTEM shows evidence of the growth of CdS nanocrystals at r… Show more

“…Analogous data for cad mium sulfide powders have been reported, for exam ple, in [8]. At the same time, the diffraction patterns of both the initial CdS nanopowder and modified sam ples show a strong reflection (2θ = 28.6°) responsible for orientation along the c axis, which is consistent with the data in [9,10] for cadmium sulfide nanopar ticles.…”

“…Relevant literature data [8][9][10][11][12][13] have been scruti nized in [14][15][16], and it has been suggested that a spe cific feature of the CdS structure in the nanosized state is disordered packing of atomic planes of nanoparti cles. This conclusion is based on comparison of the experimental and theoretical diffraction patterns.…”

“…CdS thin films are prepared by a variety of techniques such as pulsed laser deposition (PLD), vacuum evaporation, [4 -7] rfsputtering, [8,9] chemical bath deposition (CBD). [10−12] Of these, the vacuum evaporation technique is known to be suitable for preparation of CdS films for wide range of applications.…”

“…In comparison with the different techniques [11][12][13][14][15], the sol-gel method is more suitable for preparing optical materials [10,16] as it permits molecular level mixing of the precursors at a relatively lower temperature. In this work, we report formation of CdS-ZnO nanocomposites by the sol-gel method and the results of their characterization by microstructural, optical and photoluminescence studies as a function of annealing temperature and concentration of the nanoparticles in the matrix.…”
