HRT-UML: Taking HRT-HOOD onto UML

Abstract: This paper discusses issues that arose in an effort to transpose the semantic and methodological value of HRT-HOOD into a carefully-crafted selection of the UML meta-model. The main goal of the project was to prevent the massive advent of the UML from obliterating the unique strengths of the HRT specialisation of HOOD for the support of real-time design. Avoidance of closed conservatism also afforded the project the opportunity to reflect on aspects of object-oriented design that may arguably benefit the resul… Show more

“…Instead, they can be viewed as direct corollaries of it in any supporting design methodology (e.g. : HRT-HOOD [2] and derivatives [6,7]) which aims to warrant verifiability by construction, without requiring the use of exceedingly complex analysis techniques. Hence, the two additional restrictions arguably belong in the Ravenscar application domain.…”

“…Intecs works with clients in the aerospace, automotive, space, and telecommunications industries, where we advise them on development methodologies and provide specialized toolsets such as HRT-UML for the modeling of hard real-time systems [8]. This work has exposed us to the discipline of systems engineering, which is central to the development of large systems in those industries.…”
