HPV and Anal Cancer Knowledge Among HIV-Infected and Non-Infected Men Who Have Sex with Men

Abstract: In spite of efforts in recent years to raise HPV and anal cancer awareness, those groups most at risk appear to remain uncertain of risk, screening, and measures to protect themselves from the adverse implications of HPV infection.

“…Men's limited awareness of the sexually transmitted nature of HPV and the subsequent risk of anal cancer is also in line with a study on men's beliefs about HPV‐related disease, which found that only 24% of participants were aware that HPV can cause anal cancer . Recently, Fenkl et al showed that GBM are largely unaware of the link between HPV and anal cancer with HIV‐negative men having lower awareness . Our data do not confirm this difference.…”

“…High‐risk types of HPV cause anal squamous intraepithelial lesions (ASIL), of which low‐grade intraepithelial lesions (LSIL) are regarded as benign and high‐grade anal squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) in some cases progress to anal cancer . Recent works showed that GBM are largely unaware of the link between HPV and anal cancer, with HIV‐negative men having lower awareness . Lack of knowledge and recommendations from doctors are the greatest barriers to screening for HIV‐positive men …”

“…Strong religious commitment was not associated with knowledge of HPV‐related oral and anal cancers, or herpes, and this is not unexpected. Most individuals, even those at increased risk (eg, men who have sex with men), are largely uninformed and unaware of the link between HPV and anal cancer and oral cancers . Thus, it may not be religious commitment that contribute to a lack of knowledge but a society‐wide lack of knowledge.…”

“…In spite of efforts in recent years to raise HPV awareness, those groups most at risk appear to remain unaware of HPV and uncertain of the associated risks of a HPV infection, with the phenomenon appearing more severe in HIVinfected MSM. 20 The benefits of HPV vaccination in MSM, especially those who are HIV-infected, have been extensively validated and reported, however, studies on HPV knowledge and the willingness to accept HPV vaccination among this high-risk population have produced inconsistent results. [21][22][23] Most studies concluded that MSM have poor knowledge of HPV infection and vaccination whilst on the other hand enhanced HPV awareness and one's higher education level are factors positively influencing HPV vaccination acceptability.…”
