HPC on the Grid: The Theophys Experience

Abstract: The Grid Virtual Organization (VO) "Theophys", associated to the INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare), is a theoretical physics community with various computational demands, spreading from serial, SMP, MPI and hybrid jobs. That has led, in the past 20 years, towards the use of the Grid infrastructure for serial jobs, while the execution of multi-threaded, MPI and hybrid jobs has been performed in several small-medium size clusters installed in different sites, with access through standard local submiss… Show more

“…Building on resources available on IGI, the INFN theoretical physics community (Theophys VO) has recently started a project [65] aiming at fulfilling the requirements of medium-sized HPC applications. This project is achieving important results for the Theophys community, such as the deployment of a common infrastructure for parallel applications that shares the same platform with the other Grid resources available for serial jobs.…”

“…The solution proposed at the Pisa site [13] was based on the use of VOMS services, which provides support for users Roles and Groups membership within a VO. In order to access HPC resources the ''Role=Parallel'' was introduced and has to be assigned to HPC users by the VO manager.…”
