Hoxb8 Is Required for Normal Grooming Behavior in Mice

Abstract: Repertoires of grooming behaviors critical to survival are exhibited by most animal species, including humans. Genes that influence this complex behavior are unknown. We report that mice with disruptions of Hoxb8 show, with 100% penetrance, excessive grooming leading to hair removal and lesions. Additionally, these mice excessively groom normal cagemates. We have been unable to detect any skin or PNS abnormalities in Hoxb8 mutants. These observations suggest that the excessive, pathological grooming exhibited … Show more

“…Although automation in and of itself is not a panacea for neurobehavioural experiments 2 , it allows for addressing an entirely new set of questions about mouse behaviour and to conduct experiments on time scales that are orders of magnitude larger than those traditionally assayed. For example, reported tests of grooming behaviour span time scales of minutes 3,4 , whereas an automated analysis will allow for analysis of this behaviour over hours or even days and weeks.…”

“…In animals, there are also miRNAs which directly degrade their targeted mRNAs. For example, miR-196 directly cleaves the mRNA of HOXB8 (Mansfield et al, 2004;Yekta et al, 2004;Hornstein et al, 2005), which play important role in animal development (van den Akker et al, 1999;Greer and Capecchi, 2002;Reilly, 2002;El-Mounayri et al, 2005).…”

“…Compulsive grooming leading to hair removal and self-inflicted wounds has been identified as a major behavioral phenotype of the Hoxb8 homozygous mutant mouse [21]. These mice spent almost twice the time self-grooming as wild-type mice and excessively groomed or barbered control cagemates.…”
