Hox Proteins in the Regulation of Muscle Development

Abstract: Hox genes encode evolutionary conserved transcription factors that specify the anterior–posterior axis in all bilaterians. Being well known for their role in patterning ectoderm-derivatives, such as CNS and spinal cord, Hox protein function is also crucial in mesodermal patterning. While well described in the case of the vertebrate skeleton, much less is known about Hox functions in the development of different muscle types. In contrast to vertebrates however, studies in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster,… Show more

“…In addition, pdm1, a POU family gene, acts as proximal-distal growth of the wing, which has a similar function to Nub [ 35 ]. Moreover, the HOX domain regulates muscle and wing development [ 36 , 37 ], specifying the anterior posterior axis in all bilaterians [ 38 ]. So, this indicates the high expression of NUB genes in the old pupa stage and the day 1 adult flies.…”

“…We previously reported methylation changes around HOX genes in myonuclei during hypertrophy 91 and with exercise during aging in muscle 78 . HOX genes control muscle development 92,93 , but little is known about their role in RE adaptation in adult skeletal muscle.…”

“…As development progresses, the Antp expression pattern is refined to regulate gene expression in the three germ layers of mesothoracic tissues, which will develop into the cuticle, muscles, and nerves of the mesothorax, wings, and the second pair of legs. Antennapedia and other Hox proteins are crucial for embryonic muscle development (Poliacikova et al, 2021), which later will contribute to the formation of the adult thoracic musculature.…”
