How wildfires affect soil properties. A brief review

Abstract: ABSTRACT.Wildfires may produce several changes in the short-and longterm in the landscape and in the soil system. The magnitude of these changes induced by fire in the components of ecosystems (water, soil, vegetation and fauna) depends on fire properties (fire intensity and severity) and environmental factors (vegetation, soil, geomorphology, etc.) Show more

“…Soil sampling was limited to the topsoil (0-2 cm depth) since moderate fires are widely known for affecting mainly the upper 2 cm of soil (Badía et al, 2014;Zavala et al, 2014). Sampling was performed on 2 occasions: on August 10, 2010, approximately two weeks after the wildfire and before any post-fire rainfall occurrence; and on February 16, 2011, immediately before the start of the bench terracing.…”

“…Wildfires are considered a major hazard and environmental problem around the world [1][2][3]. The significant ecological damage of a forest fire is caused by a large amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere by the burning biomass [4], the accelerated soil erosion rate, and changes in the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil [5,6]. In Latin America, forest fires are considered one of the main causes of deforestation and forest degradation [7].…”
