How Valuable are Noninvasive Tests as ‎Indicators of IBD Activity and Severity in ‎the Primary Health Care‎ ‎

Abstract: Results: Seventy-eight (81.2%) patients were ulcerative colitis and 18(18.8%) were Crohn's disease, with mean age was 34.40 and 30.94 years respectively (P 0.380).FC, serum total proteins, ESR and HB level showed statistically significant difference between baseline levels and levels at time of remission. However, platelet count and serum albumin were not statistically different. The mean FC level at the time of diagnosis was 823.61±545.457μg/mg and after remission was 165.18±202.255μg/mg (P 0.000). “…However, they are not magic, and until more data become available, the use of CRP and other laboratory markers should be seen as an additive tool to clinical observation and physical examination rather than a replacement. [21][22][23][24][25] In conclusion, biomarkers (FC, ESR, CRP) can be used as non-invasive parameters for the early diagnosis and prediction of organic colonic disease. Fecal calprotectin in the IBD group revealed significant AUC value and cutoff > 159, with sensitivity 92.8% and specificity 97.5%.…”

“…Fecal calprotectin is a simple tool for assessment of the intestinal inflammation and its level are correlated with severity of intestinal inflammation [6,7]. Many conditions are associated with increase the level of fecal calprotectin such as IBD and (NSAID) use.…”

“…There is a significant need for an enhanced technique to direct the site of biopsy because these samples are random, and do not reflect the whole colon. 8 The identification of dysplasia during colonoscopy has been significantly enhanced by advanced endoscopic techniques, such as chromoendoscopy (CE) and narrowband imaging (NBI). 9,10 NBI improves mucosal surface features and vasculature, and provides the greatest contrast between the microvasculature and the adjacent mucosa, relying on the application of sequential green and blue lights.…”
