How UK academic libraries choose metasearch systems

Abstract: Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to investigate how UK academic libraries choose metasearch systems; the choice processes they use; the main influences on their choices; and whether these choice processes could be made easier. Design/methodology/approach -The project used a mixture of quantitative and qualitative research methods, consisting of a literature review, two semi-structured interviews, and an electronic questionnaire, distributed to systems librarians in UK university libraries. “…Research suggests that OPACs are still difficult to use even after the three decades-long effort of enhancement [45,46]. In order to make their resources easier to search, many libraries have incorporated federated search engines that enable searching across different sources in OPACs and DBs [47,48]. Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) has also actively incorporated more resources in WorldCat.…”

“…It seems advisable to create a starting point on the library's gateway with an easy-to-use structure that can be customized for undergraduates as well as easy-to-use federated search engines that enable searching across different sources and databases. In fact, many libraries have attempted to implement federated search engines that facilitate searching across different resources and databases that the library has (Cox, 2007;Ruddock & Hartley, 2010). Although such efforts have yielded some success, many agree that current federated search engines should be further empowered to enhance the user experience more positively.…”

“…Under certain culture conditions, P. roqueforti also shows a pronounced ability to biosynthesize secondary metabolites (Engel and Teuber 1983), some of which have antiparasitic, bacteriostatic (Kopp-Holtwiesche and Rehm 1990;Ruddock 1992;Aninat et al 2001) and anticancer properties (Nielsen et al 2005;Overy et al 2005).…”
