“…Larvae feed mainly on D. opuntiae and other Dactylopius spp. with low concentrations of carminic acid (Vanegas‐Rico et al., 2016; Trejo‐Reyes et al., 2021), with a preference for first instars over other developmental stages (Salas‐Monzón et al., 2020). In contrast, H. trifurcata adults feed on all developmental stages of D. opuntiae (Vanegas‐Rico et al., 2016), which can represent up to 70% of the total food they require to complete their life cycle and produce offspring with high fecundity, fertility, and longevity (Vanegas‐Rico et al., 2016).…”

“…Prior to introduction into the colonies, field‐collected predators were quarantined for 15 days, to ensure they were free from any disease that may affect the colony. Groups of each predator species and developmental stage were established (n = 10 individuals per group) based on their predation capacity: third instar L. bellula (Salas‐Monzón et al., 2020), fifth instar L. coccidivora (Barreto‐García et al., 2020), fourth instar and adult H. trifurcata (Vanegas‐Rico et al., 2016). Each group of individuals were placed in Ziploc bags and exposed to CO 2 for 20 min; all individuals were then transferred to an ethyl acetate chamber for 15 min.…”

“…Larvae of the specialist predator, Le. bellula, have received attention as predators of D. opuntiae [21] because they feed on all development stages [17]. Both larvae and adults of the specialist H. trifurcata [18] have been associated with D. opuntiae in the eld and occasionally feed on commercially established colonies of D. coccus [20].…”
