En la concepción de la agricultura moderna, los plaguicidas son el arma más violenta, efectiva e importante contra infestaciones agudas de las plagas (Restrepo, 1988), sin embargo, el uso intensivo de insumos químicos, en particular pesticidas, está asociado con el deterioro de la estructura y función de los agroecosistemas (Femenia & Letort, 2016), con consecuencias como la alta vulnerabilidad a perturbaciones de origen biótico, baja resiliencia o capacidad de recuperación al daño (Meneses Ospina, 2015), resurgimiento de plagas, resistencia de plagas a insecticidas y efectos letales sobre la salud humana, afectando a largo plazo la sostenibilidad del sector agrario.
