How to save both transverse colon and continence after extensive left colon surgery: A case report of a new procedure

Abstract: HighlightsNowadays after wide left colectomy, it is necessary to choose among 3 procedures: a definitive transverse colostomy, an ileo-rectal anastomosis or a right colo-rectal anastomosis (Deloyers procedure). After an extensive left proctocolectomy, to achieve the intestinal continuity between the transverse colon and rectum we performed transposition and rotation of the right colon into the pelvis. After recanalization the patient never lost the functions of the large intestine and progressively restored cont… Show more

“…In addition to enhancing the quality of life of patients by ensuring colonic continuity and preserving the integrity of the ileocecal valve, this procedure also positively impacts their metabolic and immune systems. [2,3] This study aims to evaluate the Deloyers procedure as performed during the restoration of a patient who underwent extensive colon resection and Hartmann's procedure due to firearm trauma, in conjunction with existing literature on the subject.…”

“…5 New surgical techniques for colorectal cancer have been proposed to prevent ostomy and maintain continence. 6,7 However, incontinence episodes might be a problem and impair QoL. Low anterior resection, in particular, which is one of the most indicated treatments for rectal cancer, has been associated with a 42% prevalence of low anterior resection syndrome (LARS).…”
