How to report educational videos in robotic surgery: an international multidisciplinary consensus statement

Abstract: The swift endorsement of the robotic surgical platform indicates that it might prevail as the preferred technique for many complex abdominal and pelvic operations. Nonetheless, use of the surgical robotic system introduces further layers of complexity into the operating theatre necessitating new training models. Instructive videos with relevant exposition could be optimal for early training in robotic surgery and the aim of this study was to develop consensus guidelines on how to report a robotic surgery video… Show more

“…), selected initial propositions based on personal experience, video guidelines of major journals, and a literature review. 3,5,10,[12][13][14][15][17][18][19][20][21][22][23] A Delphi questionnaire was created, and the propositions were reviewed online by the entire consensus committee in three rounds. Blinded feedback was shared among respondents between each round, and the respondents were able to suggest new propositions at the end of round 1.…”

“…5,11,[13][14][15][16] Guidelines are available for other specialties, such as general surgery, to help improve the quality of the videos, but none are available in otorhinolaryngology. 17,18 Our specialty is well suited to the creation of surgical videos, particularly when using endoscopes or microscopes in otology, rhinology, or laryngology, as first-person surgical films are readily available. Also, the great variety of specificities within each subspecialty should be taken into account during video editing.…”

“…We treated an 82‐year‐old woman who was diagnosed with synchronous right colon adenocarcinoma and renal cell carcinoma of the lower pole of the right kidney. A robotic right hemicolectomy with intracorporeal ileocolic anastomosis and a partial right nephrectomy (a nephron‐sparing procedure indicated in T1a‐b renal cell carcinomas < 7 cm, as in the present case) were performed [6,7].…”
