How to Reduce the Carbon Footprint of an Irrigation Community in the South-East of Spain by Use of Solar Energy

Abstract: The climate change that plagues the world is causing extended periods of water shortage. This situation is forcing farmers in the region of Murcia in Spain to modernize their irrigation systems to optimize use of the scarce water they have and seek a circular water economy using the recovered water. Moreover, an associated problem is the need for energy that these facilities require in order to pressurize the required water. The use of photovoltaic generation contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG… Show more

“…LCA is a method evaluating the environmental impact of a product or a service system throughout the life cycle. It includes the extraction and processing of raw materials, product production, packaging, marketing, use, reuse, and product maintenance until recycling and final waste disposal [ 16 ]. The basic structure of LCA is mainly divided into four parts: defining goals and scope, inventory analysis, impact analysis, and result interpretation.…”

“…The concepts that make up this cluster refer to air pollution and the negative consequences that bad agricultural practices imply, as well as to the lack of actions to implement CE. Examples of the investigations studying this issue are the documents under the titles "How to reduce the carbon footprint of an irrigation community in the southeast of Spain by use of solar energy" and "Mitigating ammonia and greenhouse gas emissions from stored cattle slurry using agricultural waste, commercially available products and a chemical acidifier" [82,83]. The first group of keywords is represented in red.…”

“…The annual establishment in 2018 was about 5% greater than in 2017, enlarging the PV power to 505 GW at the end of 2018 [12]. Solar power is an environmentally friendly opportunity because of the energy consumption and emissions reduction [13][14][15]. At present, the European Commission states the emissions reduction for 2050 as one of its significant targets [16].…”
