How to Improve Rate of Penetration in Field Operations

Abstract: A method has been developed to identify which factors are controlling rate of penetration ͑ROP͒ in a particular group of bit runs. The method uses foot-based mud logging data, geological information, and drill bit characteristics, to produce numerical correlations between ROP and applied drilling parameters or other attributes of drilling conditions. These correlations are then used to generate recommendations for maximizing ROP in drilling operations. IntroductionTime spent drilling ahead is usually a signifi… Show more

“…In other words, they have more flexibly compared to uncontrollable parameters and they are more prone to be controlled and modified due to financial and geological conditions. Therefore, implementing the optimum (Fear, 1999). values of these parameters would be more feasible, resulting in a faster and safer drilling operation.…”

“…Hemphill and Clark [25] studied the effect of mud chemistry on ROP through tests conducted with different types of PDC bits and drilling muds. Fear [26] conducted a series of studies using geological and mud logging data and bit properties in order to develop a correlation for estimating ROP. Ritto et al [27] introduced a new approach for optimization of ROP as a function of rotational speed at the top and the initial reaction force at the bit, vibration, stress, and fatigue limit of the dynamical system.…”

“…This point is very important if additional adjustments are made on the choke. Accurate and proper documentation is a very important aspect during the well control [8]. Recorded data will prevent any confusion about the pressures changes than to rely on memory.…”
