How to get one's voice heard: the problems of the discharge planning conference

Abstract: The performance of the discharge planning conference in its present form interferes with a caring perspective that protects patients' integrity and gives prominence to their life worlds. Moreover, it does not satisfy patients' and relatives' right to expect proceedings that enhance their possibility to express their personal wishes in a dignified manner.

“…This implies they have the power to encourage or hinder participation. Some studies indicated the impact of the organisational structure in the hospital (Efraimsson et al, 2004(Efraimsson et al, , 2006Kvangarsnes et al, 2012), which endows nurses with authority. “…However, this study declares that the patient already has difficulties in today's discharge planning due to the dysfunctional interaction between different stakeholders. Efraimsson et al [30] state that discharge planning in its present form does not enhance the possibility for the patients to express their personal wishes in a dignified manner. It also interferes with a caring perspective that protects patients' integrity.…”
