How to calculate, use, and report variance explained effect size indices and not die trying

Abstract: Many consumer research and social science journals are increasingly urging behavioral researchers to submit effect sizes among their reported results. Yet most researchers are less familiar with effect sizes than with significance tests, even in choosing among them. This article clarifies the concepts, formulae, and appropriate usage of the "variance explained" effect size indices, eta-squared, omegasquared, and epsilon-squared ( 2 , 2 , 2 ), and their partial effect size variants ( 2 p , 2 p , 2 p ). Equation… Show more

“…To test the proposed conceptual model and hypotheses, the data were tested using PROCESS version 3.5 Model 85 with 5,000 bootstrap resamples and a 95% confidence interval (Hayes, 2013). As this study analysis utilises regressions in PROCESS as opposed to ANOVAs, R 2 are reported to detail the effect sizes as opposed to eta-squared ( η 2 ), omega-squared ( ω 2 ) and epsilon-squared ( ε 2 ) (de Hues, 2012; Iacobucci et al ., 2022).…”

“…The significance threshold was set at 0.05, and a Greenhouse-Geisser correction was applied whenever the assumption of Sphericity was violated (indicated by ε). Effect sizes were indicated with Cohen’s d for t tests and partial eta squared for ANOVAs [ 57 , 58 ].…”
