D espite their dubious impact (see Chapters 3 and 4, this volume), the primary training models in psychotherapy have remained mostly unchanged. Specifically, the focus has largely been on training therapists to academically determined competency thresholds and then encouraging fidelity in applying such competencies across patients, contexts, and time. As one prominent version of this approach, therapists are trained to administer somewhat theory-narrow empirically supported treatments (ESTs) for specific disorders, with the replicable use of the theory-prescribed ingredients ostensibly signifying a clinician's competence. Although EST-centered training can be useful, as we know that many therapists become generally effective, we have little evidence that it is the training method itself that causes providers to become effective. Additionally, this approach is limiting in that it privileges treating the average patient rather than the individual, thereby neglecting those who may be less likely to respond to an EST when delivered in its standard form. Further, this EST-centric approach also implies that change will generally be linear-with few, if any, major bumps in the road that require therapists to shift their theoretical orientation during treatment.

There is research evidence, from both qualitative and quantitative studies, that silences in psychotherapy have established associations with good and poor outcomes that include and extend beyond symptom measures to processes such as insight, symbolization, and disengagement. Research also has demonstrated that therapists attend to clients’ silences, seeking to comprehend the processes therein and intentionally support productive silent processes. This chapter synthesizes this research and examines features of silence processes to provide psychotherapists with the skills to differentiate the functions of both productive and obstructive forms of pausing. It includes a review of 33 quantitative and qualitative studies on silences in individual psychotherapy (from 309 clients and 209 therapists). Our qualitative and integrative meta-analytic evidence indicated that it enhanced their ability to intervene responsively and enhance therapy outcomes when psychotherapists’ responded strategically to the specific functions of silences. We consider research limitations, training implications, and therapeutic practices based on the research evidence.

Background: In the process of psychological programs as a specialized stream, the psychologists should know their clients better and finally find the right solution to solve the problem Methods: The research method was mixed. In the qualitative, content analysis method was used and in the quantitative section, structural equation model was used. First, 11 interviews were conducted with experts in the field of sports psychology. In the latter stage, the number of samples was 108 (including 44 sports psychologists and 64 national team athletes). Qualitative and quantitative methods of descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis and structural equation analysis were used for data analysis using PLS Smart 3.2 software. Results: Results indicated that the extracted categories in qualitative part of the study included personality traits, consulting skills, knowledge and expertise, professional ethics, sports knowledge, and cognitive ability. The exploratory factor analysis showed that communication skills component was replaced with the knowledge and expertise. Conclusions: According to the results, both sports consultants and athletes believed that characteristics and abilities of a good psychologist include consulting skills, personality traits, communication skills, cognitive skills, and professional ethics. However, regarding the variable of sports knowledge, the athletes emphasized this factor more and believed that an effective sports psychologist should have the necessary sports knowledge in the field.
