How to B(e)-1 Important Cell During Leishmania Infection

Abstract: B-1 cells are an innate-like population of B lymphocytes that are subdivided into B-1a and B-1b distinguished by the presence or absence of CD5, respectively. B-1 cells can act as regulatory B cells, are able to present antigen and produce IL-10. Leishmaniasis in humans is a complex of diseases caused by parasites of the genus Leishmania. More than 20 species can infect humans, with each species causing the development of different immunological responses in the host. Susceptibility is usually related to the p… Show more

“…Impaired humoral immunity could play a critical role in the progression of CanL, as hypergammaglobulinemia, nonspecific polyclonal antibodies and circulating immune complexes correlate with clinical progression of the disease (12,(141)(142)(143). However, participation of B cells in the immunopathogenesis of leishmaniosis is not only related to antibody production, but also to their functions as regulatory and APCs (144).…”

“…However, it has been shown in Paracoccidioides brasiliensis infection that B-1 cells secretes IL-10 and induces T regulatory cells activation facilitating the progression of the disease 26 , 27 . This contribution of IL-10 production by B-1 cells was also seen in Leishmania and Francisella infections 28 30 . Therefore, B-1 cells appear to differently commit their effector function in distinct infections.…”

“…Studies using B-1 cells of deficient mice (XID mice), suggested an important role for these cells during the immune responses against infections 29 , 30 , 34 , 35 . This led us to investigate if the B-1 cells would be implyed in the response against C. gattii infection on this animal model.…”

“…Several studies confirmed that murine B1-CDP cells could phagocytose solid particles, such as latex beads and microbes, in vivo. Interestingly, B1-CDP cells had a significantly higher phagocytic activity than peritoneal macrophages [94][95][96][124][125][126][127].…”
