Changes in connectivity regimes affect patterns of diversity and species richness. In riverine ecosystems, factors that vary through space and time, such as flow, the presence of barriers to movement, and network topology determine connectivity, and in turn shape patterns of diversity and richness.While the effects of network topology and changes in spatiotemporal connectivity regimes on patterns of species richness have been studied in isolation, they have not been studied simultaneously. We used a discrete-time logistic growth metacommunity model to analyze the role of spatial and temporal functional connectivity in determining patterns of local (patch level) species richness in freshwater fish metacommunities. Our modeling suggests that:(1) the effect of spatial loss of connectivity on local species richness is mediated by network topology and where richness is measured in the system and (2) increasing temporal autocorrelation in connectivity results in increasing temporal autocorrelation in patch occupancy. Spatial and temporal loss of connectivity is a ubiquitous issue for river ecosystems, making understanding and predicting its effects of fundamental importance to both improving theory and guiding river management. Our findings highlight the importance of network topology (and hence context dependency) in shaping metacommunity response to changing connectivity regimes.

There is a complex interplay of criminal groups control over land, illicit activities, and forest cover change in the Colombian Andes-Amazon region. This area is dealing with diverse forms of conflict and peace, directly impacting landscape connectivity. While many studies have documented rapid deforestation after the peace agreement in 2016, we know little about the effect of these socio-political changes on the state of landscape connectivity. We disentangle habitat from connected habitat in forest ecosystems using the Landsat archive and landscape connectivity indices. We find that in the Andes-Amazon region during 2000-2020, connected habitat loss reached 18%, while habitat loss was 13%. This result is worrisome, because it indicates that well-connected patches are more fragmented and isolated, affecting the natural connections between the Andes and Amazon biogeographical regions and the movement ability of species. The Colombian government should conduct a strategic peacebuilding process incorporating structural changes that prevent the increase of large-scale extractive activities that are often illegal in the region. While finding a balance between extractive activities and conservation remains a big challenge, legal land tenure, census/taxation, and specific agreements with local actors can initially prevent deforestation. We discourage localized military actions and the return of aerial fumigation of coca fields, which rather than stop deforestation might exacerbate land cover change deeper into pristine forests.

Landscape connectivity has a great impact on some main threats to biodiversity such as habitat fragmentation, land use and climate change, and the expansion of invasive species and diseases. Therefore, connectivity models and measures are increasingly recognized as key tools to guide conservation management and have become a central focus of numerous biodiversity conservation strategies. However, assessing landscape connectivity is a complex process that involves multiple biotic and abiotic factors such as landscape structure and dynamics, species habitat selection, organisms' movement behavior, and dispersal capacity. Most current connectivity models overlook many of these factors, limiting their accuracy and their effectiveness to guide conservation actions. Even though this simplicity was the only plausible or the best choice in terms of data availability and cost-benefit tradeoff until now, recent advances in computing and connectivity modeling allow including other relevant factors to better reflect species movements and guide more effective and successful actions. However, techniques to include these factors are still being developed and their underlying implications are unknown. Both traditional and developing techniques may require different input data, produce different results with unknown accuracy, and lead to different consequences for conservation planning. There is a need for a comprehensive understanding of how these differences influence connectivity modeling and the subsequent effects on conservation planning in order to select the most adequate modeling technique for each connectivity study. perspectivas de este estudio sean de amplio interés y puedan guiar futuros análisis teóricos y sus aplicaciones prácticas. landscape structure (Tischendorf and Fahrig 2000;Taylor et al. 2006). The spatial arrangement of these habitat patches determines the distance in-between them, which together with the dispersal capacity of the focal species, influences the likelihood of movement between each pair of patches (Urban and Keitt 2001;Saura et al. 2011;Santini et al. 2013). For example, the distance between two habitat patches could be easily traversed by big mammals or birds with high dispersal abilities but be too far away for short dispersers such as insects or small amphibians.
