How to assess the temporal dynamics of landscape connectivity in ever-changing landscapes: a literature review

Abstract: Context. Landscape connectivity plays a key role in determining the persistence of species inhabiting fragmented habitat patches. In dynamic landscapes, most studies measure connectivity at multiple time steps, but pay less attention to explicitly quantifying its temporal dynamics to gain insights into its role in biodiversity patterns, thereby enabling more effective operational outcomes.Objectives. This article aimed at making an overview of the existing methods for the assessment of the temporal dynamics of… Show more

“…Reductions in spatial connectivity may result in permanent changes to patterns of local species richness as fewer organisms are able to disperse between patches, reducing rescue and mass effects (Perkin & Gido, 2012). Alternatively, while temporal variability in connectivity can permanently change patterns of species richness, if species can rapidly respond to changes in connectivity, richness and occupancy may fluctuate with connectivity (Uroy et al, 2021; Zeigler & Fagan, 2014).…”

“…Despite advances in assessing landscape connectivity dynamics (Uroy et al, 2021), tracking connectivity remains poorly addressed in conflict regions (Clerici et al, 2018;Correa Ayram et al, 2020). First, landscape connectivity change relies on simplistic descriptions of the landscape that fail when addressing the status of connected habitat.…”

“…Landscape dynamics is another seldom considered yet critical driver of connectivity (Alagador et al 2016;Keeley et al 2018b;Zeller et al 2020a;Uroy et al 2021). Landscape configuration is continuously changing over time altering species' habitats distribution and organisms' movements.…”

“…Unlike static and time-varying approaches, spatio-temporal studies focus on connections between different snapshots (Uroy et al 2021). Following other approaches might lead to misjudging species connectivity to their future ranges in changing landscapes.…”
