Purpose There has been a lack of meaningful information systems architecture, which comprehensively conceptualise the essential components and functionality of an information system for fire emergency response addressing needs of different job roles. The purpose of this paper is to propose a comprehensive information systems architecture which would best support four of the key firefighter job roles. Design/methodology/approach The study has built on the outcomes of two previous preliminary studies on information and human-computer interaction needs of core firefighter job roles. Scenario-based action research was conducted with firefighters in a range of roles, to evaluate human-computer interaction needs while using various technology platforms. Findings Several key themes were identified and led us to propose several layers of an integrated architecture, their composition and interactions. Research limitations/implications The selected fire scenarios may not represent every type of fire expected in high-risk built environments. Practical implications The current paper represents a shared discussion between end users, system architects and designers, to understand and improve essential components. It therefore provides a reference point for the development of information system architecture for fire emergency response. Originality/value The proposed information system architecture is novel because it outlines specific architectural elements required to meet the specific situation awareness needs of different firefighters job roles.

Resumen AbstractEstudios recientes sobre el uso de herramientas tecnológicas en situaciones de emergencia determinan que éstas contribuyen notoriamente al éxito de los planes de evacuación; por ello en los últimos años se han propuesto diferentes iniciativas, principalmente en cuanto a solventar la disponibilidad de información de rutas de escape y estados de alerta. Yanapay es un sistema de evacuación desarrollado para dispositivos móviles Android que brinda asistencia personalizada en situaciones de emergencia. La aplicación móvil indica al usuario su ubicación dentro del edificio y la ruta más corta y segura de evacuación. El usuario dispone de dos mecanismos de información, primero las rutas de evacuación calculadas se visualizan sobre planos 2D; y segundo, el sistema envía mensajes de alerta de sitios peligrosos. Los usuarios se monitorean usando tecnología RFID en pasillos, escaleras y salidas de emergencia y acoplando un módulo de lectura RFID al dispositivo móvil. Periódicamente se actualizan las rutas a través de sensores en pasillos y oficinas, que se conectan a un servidor, por medio de un módulo de adquisición, para que éste, inalám-bricamente actualice los datos del dispositivo móvil. Yanapay se validó a través de metodologías de pruebas internacionales para cada uno de sus componentes.Recent studies show that the use of technological tools in emergency situations contribute significantly to the success of the evacuation plans; because of this, in the last years different initiatives have been proposed, mainly in terms of solving the availability of information on escape routes and alertness. Yanapay is an evacuation system, developed for mobile devices (Android), which provides personalized assistance in emergencies. The mobile application shows to the user its location into the building and the shortest and safest evacuation route. The user has two information mechanisms, firstly the calculated evacuation routes are shown over the 2D planes; and second, the system sends alert messages of the dangerous sites. Users are monitored using RFID technology in corridors, stairs and emergency exits, and by coupling an RFID lecture module to the mobile device. The routes are updated periodically through sensors in corridors and offices, and they will connect to a server using an acquisition module, which will wirelessly update the mobile device data. Yanapay was validated through methodologies of international tests for each one of their components.
