How the evolution of air breathing shaped hippocampal function

Abstract: To make maps from airborne odours requires dynamic respiratory patterns. I propose that this constraint explains the modulation of memory by nasal respiration in mammals, including murine rodents (e.g. laboratory mouse, laboratory rat) and humans. My prior theories of limbic system evolution offer a framework to understand why this occurs. The answer begins with the evolution of nasal respiration in Devonian lobe-finned fishes. This evolutionary innovation led to adaptive radiations in chemosensory systems, in… Show more

“…Recent advances in cognitive neuroscience, demonstrating the importance of nasal respiration for human memory, must put to rest any thought that this is a niche topic. Hence, to understand cognition, we must face the challenge of understanding this complex and understudied sensory modality, in particular directional olfaction (Jacobs 2012(Jacobs , 2022. By embracing our olfactory minds, perhaps a whole new PROUSTian world will appear, crossing time, space and evolutionary history.…”

“…But this downplays or ignores a critical function of olfactory cognition, its role in spatial orientation, i.e., directional olfaction (Jacobs 2019 ). This is an important distinction because many paradoxes of olfactory anatomy and psychophysics can only be explained in terms of directional olfaction functions (Jacobs 2012 , 2022 ; Marin et al 2021 ). In the olfactory spatial hypothesis (Jacobs 2012 ), I discuss how unique patterns of allometry and neuroplasticity in the vertebrate olfactory system play a role in directional olfaction.…”

“…The neural circuit examined in this paper was chosen because it spans specific functional aspects critical for social behavior. Together, the olfactory bulb, amygdala, and hippocampus form a tightly connected network (for review see Brodal, 1947 andEichenbaum andOtto, 1992) that provide information about autonomic, sensory, spatio-temporal, and affective context (Moberly et al, 2018;Jacobs, 2022) (see Figure 2). They are, thus, well situated to provide valuable information regarding the benefits and liabilities of the external environment during social interaction, exploration, and sampling of the sensory information.…”

“…Other implications of the water to land transition are discussed by Lucia Jacobs, whose paper proposes how air-breathing set the stage for hippocampal evolution in terrestrial tetrapods [ 46 ]. Her olfactory navigation hypothesis [ 47 ] suggests that olfaction is not just about odour identification, but fundamentally about using odours for spatial navigation.…”
