The current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused significant strain on medical centers resources. Thus, concerns about the reducing and management of COVID-19 are on the rise, as there is need to provide diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and follow-ups during the pandemic. Therefore, the COVID-19 pandemic has radically and quickly altered how medical practitioners provide care to patients. Medical centers are now responding to COVID-19 through rapid adoption of digital tools and technologies such as telemedicine and virtual care which refer to the delivery of healthcare services digital or at a distance using Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for treatment of patients. Telemedicine is expected to deliver timely care while minimizing exposure to protect medical practitioners and patients. Accordingly, a rapid literature review was conducted, and 35 research studies published from 2019 to May 2020 were employed to provide theoretical and practical evidence on the significance of using telemedicine and virtual care for remote treatment of patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. This article provides practical guide based on how to use telemedicine and virtual care during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study provides implication on the potentials of consolidating virtual care solutions in the near future towards contributing to integrate digital technologies into healthcare.

We investigate the impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic and related policy responses on non‐COVID‐19 healthcare utilization (i.e., different types of outpatient care) up to October 2020 in China. Using an administrative database from a large prefecture‐level city, we find that both direct exposure to the COVID‐19 pandemic and the strict containment policy responses led to reductions in outpatient care utilization. The largest decline during the lockdown was observed in preventive care visits, which nevertheless recovered to pre‐pandemic levels 2 months after the lockdown. The disruptions in prenatal care visits could not be offset by the recovery later on. Chronic care and emergency department visits had not returned to pre‐pandemic levels as of October 2020, which may be driven by extended days' supply of prescription medication, increased use of telemedicine, and improved health‐protective behaviors. In the reopening period, there were increases in visits for mental and sleep disorders, especially among children, and for medical abortion. Among health facilities at all levels, primary care facilities saw the least reductions in total outpatient visits. Our results emphasize the need for strategies to ensure access to urgent or essential care services when managing the current epidemiologic transition and future crises.

Public health crises such as the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic across the world overstrained the health care system. Accordingly, telehealth and digital technologies were implemented. Telehealth and digital technologies refer to the provision of health care at a distance using electronic means for diagnosis, evaluation, treatment, monitoring, and education of patients. This approach, while extremely useful, can be challenging for both patients and physicians, mainly as this is a new mode of health care to health practitioners and patients. Intrinsically, when managing the massive disruption to the routine of patient health care workflow, it is important to understand the important factors associated with an accelerated introduction of telehealth and digital technologies for the effective and safe continuation of healthcare during a public health crisis. Accordingly, this current study performed a qualitative review analysis of 40 scientific sources from 2019 to 2022. Findings present health practitioners that implemented telehealth and digital technologies during the public health emergency. Additionally, findings from this study presents a workflow approach for telehealth visit cycle and also discusses the current telehealth and virtual applications being implemented during public health crisis. This study provides implications to support health care managers and policymakers of health centres to be virtually informed regarding digital applications being implemented by patients and health practitioners on how to implement an effective telehealth system during public health crises.
