How stable are ‘left’ and ‘right’? A morphological analysis using open-ended survey responses of parliamentary candidates

Abstract: The left–right scale is widely used to measure ideological orientation. Relying on Freeden's approach to political ideology as a ‘conceptual morphology’, we argue that the meaning of ‘left’ and ‘right’ may change, but these changes are more likely for peripheral than core concepts. To test this argument, we analyze open-ended questions on the meaning of ‘left’ and ‘right’ included in two waves of surveys of German parliamentary candidates collected before and after the 2015 European migration crisis. The empir… Show more

“…At the same time, supporters of right-wing political views are characterized by a lower stability of their civic identity, which indicates a greater willingness to change the state of citizenship under certain conditions, particularly in the case of the impossibility of selfrealization in the native state. On the other hand, citizens who share left-wing political views (the idea that the state should provide economic and social guarantees to citizens (Jankowski et al, 2023) and clearly define the permissible limits of their activity regarding the smallest possible inequality of citizens and the duty of all nondisabled citizens to work, the priority of group interests over the individual) are more prone to не може задовольнити потреби всіх громадян.…”

“…У той же час прихильники правих політичних поглядів характеризуються нижчою стійкістю власної громадянської ідентичності, що свідчить про більшу готовність змінити державу підданства за тих чи інших умов, зокрема, у випадку неможливості власної самореалізації у рідній державі. Натомість громадяни, що поділяють ліві політичні погляди (ідеї про те, що держава повинна давати економічні та соціальні гарантії громадянам (Jankowski et al, 2023) та чітко визначати допустимі межі їхньої активності щодо якомога меншої нерівності громадян і обов'язку усіх працездатних громадян працювати, пріоритету групових інтересів над індивідуальними), більше схильні до патерналізму і переживання себе "маленьким гвинтиком великого механізму", при цьому демонструють вищу здатність зберігати громадянську ідентичність в умовах негативних зовнішніх впливів. insight.stateuniversity.ks.ua ISSN 2663-970Х paternalism and experience themselves as a "small cog in a big mechanism", while demonstrating a higher ability to preserve their civic identity in the face of negative external influences.…”

“…The increasing (or, at least not diminishing) strength of the link between left-right and EU support goes contrary to our theoretical expectations. One way to explain this is to consider that the meaning of left-right itself changes over time and differs across countries (Jankowski et al, 2022;Steiner, 2021). As the implicit interpretation people attach to the left-right scale moves from a socioeconomic one to one related more to other issues, such as immigration, the connection with EU attitudes could become stronger, as these other issues are more tightly connected with EU support, as this paper also shows.…”

“…In theoretical terms, we can expect that the strength of the relationship between left-right and EU attitudes has decreased over time, as the meaning of left-right to citizens has become more diffuse and European integration has reached more and more policy areas beyond market integration (for a study showing how the more peripheral ideas of the left-range concept change, see Jankowski et al, 2022). In the earlier days of European integration, the European Communities/European Union were not as politicized as has been the case more recently (De Vries, 2018;Hooghe & Marks, 2009).…”

“…Ennek ellenére a bal és jobb megközelítés, értékrendszer és ideológiai háttér a mai napig alkalmazható. Habár különbségeket mutat, hogy mennyire homogén a "bal" és "jobb" oldal, mint ideológia értelmezése, perifériális különbségeket leszámítva, a politikai szervezeteket képesek az emberek a két tengely mentén elhelyezni (Jankowski et al, 2022). Ezzel szemben egyes szerzők ontológiai értelemben politikán túlinak nevezik a mai politikai helyzetet és megkérdőjelezik a politikai skálák létjogosultságát (Blakey, 2021).…”
