“…Despite an abundance of literature related to other aspects of acute pain care in children, such as assessment (Dürango, Åkeson, Jonsson, Nilsson, & Åkeson, 2017;Royal College of Nursing, 2009) and interventions (Shrestha-Ranjit & Manias, 2010), less is known about how nurses work in partnership with parents to involve them in their child's acute pain care (Jaakola, Mervi, Kaariainen, & Palkki, 2013). This is compounded by the differences in how parents and nurses understand and perceive involvement and partnership working, which is highlighted in the wider literature and contributes to the variations in implementing parental involvement in practice (Uniackle et al, 2018;Vázquez Sellán et al, 2017). Parental involvement is a component of family-centred care and occurs at the nurse-led end of the familycentred care practice continuum (Smith, Coleman, & Bradshaw, 2010).…”

“…Despite family-centred care being espoused as an ideal philosophy to support nurses and parents working together, it is challenging to embed into practice (Coyne, Murphy, Costello, O'Neill, & Donnellan, 2013;Smith et al, 2015). Furthermore, growing concern about lack of a shared understanding of family-centred care (Al-Motlaq, et al, 2018) and its usefulness to guide practice ensue (Uniackle et al, 2018).…”
