How should prostate specific antigen be interpreted?

Abstract: Since from its clinical introduction to the present time, measurement of serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) level is one of the most widely used tests in urology practice. Initially, the upper limit for PSA was 4 ng/mL, but today, a reduction for the upper limit is recommended to 2.5-3 ng/mL for patients between 60 and 65 years of age and younger. On the use of PSA as a screening test for prostate cancer, there are differences of opinion. However, it is a recommended test in the evaluation and monitoring of… Show more

“…The normal level of tPSA level is <4ng/mL, FPSA level is <0.01ng/mL whereas percentage PSA is >25% [8]. In case of carcinoma there is up to 10 folds increase in tPSA level [8]. In our study the mean tPSA level was 100.08 ng/mL (range 4.87 to 1564 ng/mL) with standard deviation of 287.89.…”

“…We analyzed the relationships between polymorphisms of the EGF and EGFR genes and BPH. The BPH patients were dichotomized according to prostate volume, IPSS score, and PSA level [19,20]. The genotype and allele distributions of the tested SNPs are shown in Tables 3 and 4 for each group.…”

“…First, there are multiple sources of TEa for total PSA. Second, total PSA has more than one intended use – it may be used for screening subjects for prostate cancer or for monitoring patients ( 11 ). Lastly, total PSA has generally accepted medical decision concentrations ( 11 , 12 ).…”
