“…From a more societal approach, Warner and Higgins 10 have studied the value of shoulder surgery, where "value" is defined as "outcome" divided by "cost." Studies such as the present one by Saier et al 5 help us better define the numerator in this "value" equation. All of these outcomes assessments help us better understand how our interventions not only affect the disease but also the patient.…”

“…Overall, Saier et al 5 should be commended for their very interesting study. Furthermore, their work serves as a reminder to our profession that, although we perform surgery on the diseased joint, we take care of the whole patient.…”

“…The finding of 76.1% of patients responding yes to the PASS question in the current study suggests a high satisfaction rate among patients at 1 year postoperatively and is supported by previous data. Saier et al 18 provided longitudinal findings of patient satisfaction and function after arthroscopic Bankart repair in a prospective case series of 53 patients with a mean age at surgery of 29.4 years who were followed to a mean of 24 months. The authors used 2 scales to assess quality of life (the FLZ and the SF-12) and 3 others for functional outcomes (the Oxford Shoulder Instability Score, ASES questionnaire, and the shortened version of Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire), and they also assessed return to work.…”

“…9 Arthroscopic shoulder surgery appears to be headed in the same direction, and rightfully so. 10 In our humble opinion, the orthopaedic community has not yet put the pieces of the puzzle together. We are slowly identifying separate factors associated with postoperative outcomes, but the edges of these pieces do not yet fit together.…”
