Background: The eastern region of the calcium isotope chain of the nuclei chart is, nowadays, of great activity. The experimental assessment of the limit of stability is of interest to confirm or improve microscopic theoretical models. Purpose: The goal of this work is to provide the drip line of the calcium isotopes from the exact solution of the pairing Hamiltonian which incorporate explicitly the correlations with the continuum spectrum of energy. Method: The modified Richardson equations, which include correlations with the continuum spectrum of energy modeled by the continuum single particle level density, is used to solve the many-body system. Three models are used, two isospin independent models with core 40 Ca and 48 Ca, and one isospin dependent model. Results: One and two-neutron separation energies and occupation probabilities for bound and continuum states are calculated from the solution of the Richardson equations. Conclusions: The one particle drip line is found at the nucleus 57 Ca, while the two neutron drip line is found at the nucleus 60 Ca from the isospin independent model and at 66 Ca from the isospin dependent one.

The strength of the N = 28 magic number in neutron-rich argon isotopes is examined through high-precision mass measurements of 46-48 Ar, performed with the ISOLTRAP mass spectrometer at ISOLDE/CERN. The new mass values are up to 90 times more precise than previous measurements. While they suggest the persistence of the N = 28 shell closure for argon, we show that this conclusion has to be nuanced in light of the wealth of spectroscopic data and theoretical investigations performed with the SDPF-U phenomenological shell model interaction. Our results are also compared with ab initio calculations using the valence space in-medium similarity renormalization group and the self-consistent Green's function approaches. Both calculations provide a very good account of mass systematics at and around Z = 18 and, generally, a consistent description of the physics in this region. This combined analysis indicates that 46 Ar is the transition between the closed-shell 48 Ca and collective 44 S.

A Guided Tour of ab initio Nuclear Many-Body Theory

Over the last decade, new developments in Similarity Renormalization Group techniques and nuclear many-body methods have dramatically increased the capabilities of ab initio nuclear structure and reaction theory. Ground and excited-state properties can be computed up to the tin region, and from the proton to the presumptive neutron drip lines, providing unprecedented opportunities to confront two-plus three-nucleon interactions from chiral Effective Field Theory with experimental data. In this contribution, I will give a broad survey of the current status of nuclear many-body approaches, and I will use selected results to discuss both achievements and open issues that need to be addressed in the coming decade.
