How Relevant is Hick's Law for HCI?

Abstract: Hick's law is a key quantitative law in Psychology that relates reaction time to the logarithm of the number of stimulusresponse alternatives in a task. Its application to HCI is controversial: Some believe that the law does not apply to HCI tasks, others regard it as the cornerstone of interface design. The law, however, is often misunderstood. We review the choice-reaction time literature and argue that: (1) Hick's law speaks against, not for, the popular principle that 'less is better'; (2) logarithmic grow… Show more

“…Infographics created using this framework should reduce cognitive burden by utilizing straightforward imagery, little text, and a unified design aesthetic. The Hick's Law framework [64] is built on the idea that the longer it takes a viewer to decide, the more alternatives or elements there are in a design. In order to reduce decisionmaking time and increase understanding, infographics created using this framework ought to contain a minimal number of elements, such as colors, typefaces, and shapes.…”

“…[10,32]), but also early on in HCI [23] wherein RT has become a frequent measure of interaction technique performance (see e.g. [13,17,22,25] for recent examples). Interaction interferences involve a specific type of reaction time, sometimes called "Stop-Signal Reaction Time" (SSRT), in which the stimulus calls for an absence of reaction, or for the inhibition of an already planned reaction.…”

“…We gathered 30 relevant examples of interaction interferences from the 25 remaining respondents (8 females, 16 males, 1 non binary, ages 20 to 55), mostly from Europe (17) and Canada (6). A majority were students (13, either bachelor, master, or PhD) or researchers (7).…”

“…This overwhelms their vision arXiv:2101.05508v1 [cs.MM] 14 Jan 2021 and thus negatively impacts their driving experience. In fact, a driver's decision time increases logarithmically with the number of stimulus or objects [8]. Additionally, limiting the number of objects to the human cognition capacity of about 7±2 items [9] is important.…”
