PurposeIndustry 5.0 provides significant social, environmental and economic benefits over previous industrial revolutions. However, research in the field of industry 5.0 is still at a very nascent stage. Little is known about research trends in the field and its applications in specific sectors as construction which have relatively low sustainability index. Hence, this study aims to explore research trends in industry 5.0 and its applications in the construction industry.Design/methodology/approachThe study adopted a bibliometric analysis with the use of the vosviewer. The main search words used in the study were “Industry 5.0”, “Society 5.0” AND “Fifth Industrial Revolution”. Initial extracted papers with these keywords were 1036. After refining based on language, document type, key words and timeframe, a total of 188 papers were found suitable for the analysis.FindingsThe most impactful research on Industry 5.0 to date was from the United States, Australia and Sweden while the journal sustainability was found to be the highest document source on Industry 5.0. The application areas of industry 5.0 in the construction industry include health and safety, collaborative working, waste management, measurement of environmental features (indoor air quality, atmospheric pressure, noise, humidity and temperature) and forecasting of environmental, social or financial outcomes.Research limitations/implicationsThe study used review based papers which form the bulk of the existing research on industry 5.0. This limits understanding of the practical applications, benefits and challenges associated with the use of industry 5.0.Originality/valueThis work contributes to the theory and practice of industry 5.0 by providing baseline data for future research directions on industry 5.0. The work specifically highlights the application areas of industry 5.0 in the construction industry and also indicates the need for questionnaire, interviews or case study based research to enhance understanding of the practical applications of industry 5.0.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the current era offers the ultimate possibility for prosperous corporate life, especially in the transport sector. Industry 4.0 covers artificial intelligence, big data, or industrial IoT, and thus spatial cognition algorithms, traffic flow prediction, autonomous vehicles, and smart sustainable mobility are not far away. The mentioned tools have already been implemented by enterprises in emerging countries. This exploration focused on transportation within the V4 region from 2016–2021. This article aims to confirm the positive sequel of applying Industry 4.0 to chosen indicators of profitability. The positive, negative, or no shift in the development of 534 businesses was based on Pettitt’s test. The Pearson chi-square test disclosed the significant dependency between Industry 4.0 and shifts in profitability ratios. Then, more than 25% of enterprises involved in Industry 4.0 had positive shifts in ROA, ROC, ROS, and ROR. The research proved not only its balanced effect but also its augmented force through the z-test of proportion. This investigation may provide multiple proofs for connected sectors with transportation to adapt the tools of Industry 4.0 and deliver the call for the governments in the V4 region to make this tool more achievable.

Human–robot interaction is becoming an integral part of practice. There is a greater emphasis on safety in workplaces where a robot may bump into a worker. In practice, there are solutions that control the robot based on the potential energy in a collision or a robot re-planning the straight-line trajectory. However, a sensor system must be designed to detect obstacles across the human–robot shared workspace. So far, there is no procedure that engineers can follow in practice to deploy sensors ideally. We come up with the idea of classifying the space as an importance index, which determines what part of the workspace sensors should sense to ensure ideal obstacle sensing. Then, the ideal camera positions can be automatically found according to this classified map. Based on the experiment, the coverage of the important volume by the calculated camera position in the workspace was found to be on average 37% greater compared to a camera placed intuitively by test subjects. Using two cameras at the workplace, the calculated positions were 27% more effective than the subjects’ camera positions. Furthermore, for three cameras, the calculated positions were 13% better than the subjects’ camera positions, with a total coverage of more than 99% of the classified map.
