Industrial activities can contribute to the accumulation of heavy metals in soils, which could potentially threaten public health and the environment. This research was conducted to investigate the relationships between pH and total organic carbon (TOC) with soil chemical parameters, including exchangeable and total Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, K, and Mg concentrations in soils near Panevėžys and Kaunas, Lithuania. Principal component regression (PCR) and non‐linear regression were used to find statistical relationships between pH, TOC, and the other soil properties studied. The results of correlation tests indicated that pH and TOC had strong relationships with most of the soil properties. The results of PCR [R2 = 0·87, RMSE = 0·046] and non‐linear regression [R2 = 0·91, RMSE = 0·041] (pH and the entire parameters), PCR [R2 = 0·777, RMSE = 0·058] and non‐linear regression [R2 = 0·871, RMSE = 0·046] (pH and the exchangeable parameters) to model the relationships between pH and soil chemical properties were promising and significant. Exchangeable heavy metal concentrations increased for pH > 5. Even though the relationships between TOC and heavy metals were significant, they were not as powerful as the relationships between pH and these metals. It was concluded that total metal concentrations in the study soils can be predicted by either pH or TOC. Metal mobility could most likely be controlled at the study site by manipulating soil pH and/or TOC. Finally, it is suggested that when there are financial and time limitations, assessment of total exchangeable metal concentrations using soil pH and/or TOC could be productive. Purpose Due to their close proximity with the population, urban soils are extensively affected by human activities that release considerable technogenic inputs resulting in an overall soil degradation and leading to an increase of water-extractable fraction of trace elements. This work aimed to determine the influence of anthropization on trace and major element concentrations and to assess how it might also affect soil biochemical and microbiological parameters in an urban area of Marrakech city, Morocco. Materials and methods The work was carried out on nine topsoils located along an anthropogenic gradient from a suburban area to the city center. The percentage of technogenic fraction (TGF) (e.g., building material, plastic, wood, metallic material, bones, glass, paper, fabric) was used to quantify the degree of human interference in the different soils. Physicochemical parameters were measured: pH (in water solution), TOC (Anne method), TKN, and Olsen phosphorus. The total fraction of trace and major elements (ISO NF 11446) and their water-soluble fraction were analyzed with an ICP-OES. Enumeration of cultivable microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes) was conducted on culture media. Dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, and urease activities were colorimetrically measured, and the structure and diversity of soil bacterial communities were determined by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) technique. Results and discussion In general, trace and major element concentrations showed increasing levels along the anthropogenic gradient, except for Ca, Mg, B, and Cd. However, trace element concentrations remained below the standard international limits for soils. Total numbers of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes) varied significantly among sites, with bacterial counts directly related to the anthropogenic gradient, significantly increasing from suburban area to the city center. Dehydrogenase activity decreased throughout the anthropogenic gradient, while phosphatase and urease activities varied between sites independently of the gradient. DGGE profiles showed that bacterial diversity was higher in the most anthropized soils, where their community structure seemed to be influenced by the total concentrations of Zn, As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and the technogenic fraction. Conclusions Overall, trace and major element concentrations and the technogenic fraction were higher with increasing levels of urbanization. An alternative for sustainable urban development is to revegetate cities with the construction of planters as well as to recover degraded sites. The objective of this work was to characterize urban waste materials produced in Mexico City and to evaluate their potential for constructing Technosols for plant growth, as an alternative to use in revegetating the city without affecting natural landscapes. Construction and demolition waste materials amended with different application rates of compost made out of gardening wastes from Mexico City green areas were tested. Nine mixtures were prepared; three based on concrete, three based on demolition waste and three based on excavation waste. Changes on physical, chemical and physicochemical properties of these mixtures, namely nutrient contents, water retention and aeration capacity, were monitored in a twelve-month experiment. The mineralogy and the risk regarding the release of heavy metals and trace elements were also evaluated in the soluble fraction. The constructed Technosols were appropriate, to a greater or lesser extent, for tomato plant growth. Soil pH and soil electrical conductivity (EC) were the main factors defining their suitability; both parameters changed over time due to the washing of salts. The particle size of the mineral materials as well as the application rates of compost used in the construction of the Technosols resulted in adequate water holding capacity and soil aeration for plant growth. The type of parental materials defined the majority of the Technosol characteristics as well as their ability to function as a plant support. The concentrations of readily available heavy and trace metals were not a limitation for plant growth. However, potential co-transport of these elements with soluble organic matter should be considered in further research.
