Background: Suicide is a serious public health problem, responsible for 1.48% of all deaths worldwide, with suicidal ideation an important precursor. University and college students are among highly affected groups. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of suicidal ideation and to identify factors associated with suicidal ideation among university students in Ethiopia. Methods:A random selection of 836 students was surveyed. Binary and multivariable logistic regression models were fitted, adjusting for potential confounders. Associations were measured using odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Analyses were carried out using the SPSS version 20 software. Results:The prevalence of suicidal ideation was 19.9% (95% CI 17.1-22.4%). The odds of suicidal ideation was higher among students who had mental distress (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 2.0, 95% CI 1.38-2.91), a family history of mental illness (AOR = 3.05, 95%, 1.89-4.92) and for those who had low social support (AOR = 2.0, 95% CI 1.35-2.82). Financial distress (AOR = 1.59, 95% CI 1.09-2.33), Khat chewing (AOR = 1.78, 95% CI 1.05-3), and alcohol use (AOR = 1.6, 95% CI 1.05-2.42) were also significantly associated with suicidal ideation. We found no evidence of associations between suicidal ideation and gender, age, relationship status, or year of study. Conclusions:One in five students reported suicidal ideation. There was strong evidence of associations between suicidal ideation and mental distress, family history of mental illness, low social support, financial distress, and substance use. It is, therefore, important to develop suicide prevention strategies targeting these risk factors for university students in Ethiopia.

Background: Suicidal ideation and attempts are highly prevalent among medical students compared to the general population and negatively impacts the quality of life, physical, and mental well being of students. However, research into suicidal ideation and attempts among medical students in low and middle-income countries are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the suicidal ideation and attempts and associated factors among medical students in Ethiopia. Methods : An institution based cross-sectional study was conducted on 393 medical students from March to June 2019 at the University of Gondar in Ethiopia. A simple random sampling technique used to get study units by their identification card. Suicidal ideation and attempts were assessed by using World Health Organization Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) to assess lifetime suicidal ideation and attempt during medical school. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires. Bi-variable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify associated factors between suicidal ideation and attempts with the explanatory variables at P-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: A total of 393 study participants were interviewed with a response rate of 92.9%. The prevalence of suicidal ideation and attempts among study participants were found to be 14% and 7.4% with 95% CI (10.9, 18.1) and (5.1, 10.2), respectively. In multivariate logistic regression; female sex (AOR: 5.21, 95% CI: 2.42, 11.20), depression (AOR: 10.12, 95% CI; 4.80, 21.52), current khat chewing (AOR: 4.46, 95% CI; 132, 15.02), and poor social support (AOR: 4.46, 95% CI: 1.43, 13.87) were factors significantly associated with suicidal ideation. Being female (AOR: 8.08, 95% CI: 3.04, 21.39), depression (AOR: 10.66, 95% CI; 4.01, 28.01 ), and history of mental illness (AOR: 5.53, 95% CI; 1.20, 25.50) were factors significantly associated with suicide attempts. Conclusions : In the current study, the prevalence of suicidal ideation among medical students was low compared to other studies, but the suicide attempt was high. Ethiopian medical students better to instate a screening program for every medical student for early detection and intervention of suicidal ideation and attempt. Mahasiswa rantau mengalami berbagai perubahan dalam kehidupannya. Dimulai dari perbedaan kebudayaan, perpisahan dengan keluarga, serta adaptasi dengan lingkungan kampus. Ketidakmampuan mahasiswa untuk beradaptasi dapat berdampak pada masalah kesehatan jiwa seperti ide bunuh diri. Dukungan sosial yang rendah dapat menjadi salah satu faktor yang dapat menyebabkan munculnya ide bunuh diri pada mahasiswa rantau. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan dukungan sosial dengan ide bunuh diri pada mahasiswa rantau Universitas Indonesia khususnya yang berasal dari daerah Jawa Tengah. Metode penelitian menggunakan desain penelitian analitik korelatif dengan pendekatan cross sectional pada 239 mahasiswa rantau. Instrumen pada penelitian ini adalah kuesioner Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) untuk sumber dukungan sosial serta Suicide Ideation Scale (SSI) untuk ide bunuh diri. Analisis data yang digunakan yaitu analisa univariat dan bivariat dengan uji korelasi gamma. Uji korelasi gamma digunakan untuk melihat ada tidaknya hubungan serta kekuatan hubungan pada dua variabel yang setingkat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ada hubungan signifikan dengan kekuatan sedang antara dukungan sosial dengan ide bunuh diri pada mahasiswa rantau dengan nilai p value yaitu 0,000 (p value ≤ 0,05, r= -0,533). Skrining kesehatan mental, pendidikan kesehatan, dan meningkatkan dukungan sosial perlu dilakukan untuk mempertahankan status kesehatan mental serta mencegah munculnya masalah ide bunuh diri pada mahasiswa rantau. Starting from cultural differences, separation from family, and also adaptation to the campus environment. The inability of students to adapt can have an impact on mental health problems such as suicide ideas. Low social support can be one of the factors that can lead to the idea of suicide in migrant students. This research was conducted to find the correlation between social support and suicide ideas among migrant students at Universitas Indonesia,, especially those from Central Java. The methodology of this research is correlative analytic research design with a cross sectional approach to 239 migrant students. The instrument in this study was Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) questionnaire for sources of social support and the Suicide Ideation Scale (SSI) for suicide ideas. Data analysis used is univariate and bivariate analysis with gamma correlation test. The gamma correlation test is used to see whether there is a correlation and the strength of the correlation on two equal variables. The result of this research shows the significant correlation with medium strength between social support and suicide ideas among migrant students with a p value of 0,000 (p value ≤ 0.05, r=0,533). Mental health screening, health education, and increasing social support need to be done to maintain mental health status and prevent the suicide ideas problems among migrant students.
