How open innovation practices drive innovation performance: moderated-mediation in the interplay between overcoming syndromes and capabilities

Abstract: Purpose This paper aims to investigate whether and under what conditions open innovation (OI) drives innovation performance (IP) in the financial sector. To this end, the paper first analyzes in-depth the indirect effect of overcoming two attitudinal mediators, namely, not-invented-here syndrome (NIHS) and not-sold-here syndrome (NSHS). It then uses dynamic capabilities theory to hypothesize that the indirect effects are moderated by absorptive and desorptive capabilities, respectively. Design/methodology/ap… Show more

“…Since organisations' capabilities can be enhanced through the integration of resources among the system's members [29], and the shared infrastructure provided through clustering allows organisations to adapt quickly to market shocks [43], it can be argued that SCCDCs can be used to enhance resilience, and especially that strong partnerships can increase resilience [44]. Organisations in a SCC can exploit external knowledge by hiring skilled labour and acquiring information and knowledge from the pool created by SC-CDC [25], which enhances creativity and innovation [45,46]. Since AC can be enhanced through the facilitation of sharing knowledge and information [47] and access to new skills and resources [48], it can be argued that SCCDCs can pave the way for organisations to develop their AC.…”

“…Second, the firm's shifting the allocation of their resources may face different challenges from managing innovation performance to meeting market demand [40]. These risks can be decreased with proper planning and coordination but exist, nevertheless [27], [41], [56]. Third, the scope of OI implementation would limit the success of OI [47], [57].…”
